Food & Textiles Regional Events

The Food Teachers Centre and Textiles Skills Academy have joined forces to hold joint regional events with a very exciting mix of speakers and workshops.

With the success of the joint food & textiles June 2016 event we have decided to take it on the road. We are bringing a few of top features of this training day to take around the country throughout 2016-17.

The day is divided in to three workshop sessions which you can attend all of:

1. Plan for the Future: Food and Textiles teaching.
Presenters: Louise T Davies (Founder, Food Teachers Centre) and Dawn Foxall (Founder, Textiles Skills Academy)

New D&T and Food GCSEs and Progress 8! Never have food and textiles teachers faced such an array of new challenges and opportunities! How will you know you are getting it right in your school? We find ourselves sitting in the third bucket, competing with every other creative and vocational option. With a decline in numbers and funding for D&T we need to understand the wider scene and prove that our lessons are relevant, vibrant, and essential for EVERY child. This presentation equips you with ideas to secure a better future for your subject at school, by linking in the key government drivers and skills that future employers value.

2. Inspiring Textiles in the Classroom:
Presenter Nicky Simspon (Hillview School)

Improve your practical skills including both hand and machine sewing for Key stage 4 and 5; including smocking, shadow folds, heat press innovation and computer aided design. Begin a construction sample resource to use in your classroom to create exciting and innovative products. Ideas for excellent products, lesson activities, schemes of work that lead to improved coursework/exam performance. Plenty of inspirational examples and resources to photograph.

3. Inspiring Food in the Classroom:
Presenter: Barbara Monks (Food Teachers Centre, Senior Associate, thecookeryteacher.com ) or Joe Mann (Food Teachers Centre, Senior Associate, Fun Kitchen)

Stimulating and thought provoking food science investigations in KS3 and Y10 in preparation for the new GCSE, prepare for the new NEA (food science investigation). This practical and presentation session will help you gain a better understanding of the working characteristics, functional and chemical properties of ingredients.

COSTS & BOOKINGS (Via Eventbrite): £175 +VAT

All of these events are ticket only and payable IN ADVANCE.

We use Eventbrite (as many organisations do) to automate the bookings via credit card and cheque. When you book you will receive by email a full VAT invoice/receipt.

PLEASE NOTE your booking confirmation and ticket will be emailed to both the delegate and person purchasing. If you do not receive your ticket it is most commonly caused by typing your email address incorrectly, or it is in your SPAM folder. Please check your booking carefully.

It is VERY important that your school finance manager supplies your full name and PERSONAL SCHOOL email so that we are able to send you joining instructions and further details. If we only receive the ‘school office’ email address, we have found in the past that this delays information getting to you or information is not passed on.

If you have any queries, please ask via the Eventbrite site messaging, and leave your phone number or email so that we can contact you easily.


Once booked, if you cannot come You can send someone else, but you may not get a refund unless we can resell your ticket, but we are happy to transfer your booking if there is space on another event.

The Textiles Skills Academy was founded in 2015 to support the delivery of textiles across education. Led by Dawn Foxall and Heidi Ambrose-Brown, the Textiles Skills Academy aims to bring together experienced education presenters and industry experts to deliver relevant and inspiring events and workshops.

FOOD TEACHER CENTRE is a UK based self-help group founded by Louise T Davies in 2013 and supported by experienced associates. It provides a platform to exchange best practice, give advice and support to less experienced teachers, answering practical concerns and keeping them abreast of the latest curriculum changes. A one-stop shop for like-minded professionals who seek help and information. It is free to take part and is facilitated through a closed on-line group, safeguarding the conversations of the teaching staff.

The idea of a ‘Teacher’s Centre’ is a response to the lack of local and national specialist support and diminishing Continuing Professional Development with the demise of local authority advisers ASTs, lead practitioners and supporting organisations.
