Mozart Symphony in G ‘Lambach’ K45
Mozart Grabmusik K42
Mozart Apollo et Hyacinthus K38

Classical Opera’s ground-breaking MOZART 250 project arrives at Mozart’s astonishing first opera, Apollo et Hyacinthus, based on a colourful story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and written when the composer was just eleven years old. The opera is preceded by a staging of the equally remarkable dramatic cantata Grabmusik, which also dates from 1767.

Apollo et Hyacinthus proved a pearl beyond price… Here was a work of staggering beauty, riddled with sweet noises like Caliban’s enchanted isle.” The Independent

“It was fun, fresh, thought provoking and one of the best nights at the opera I can remember having! Ian Page conducted with panache in music that was lyrical, stylish and unbelievably mature for an eleven-year-old composer to have written.” Musical Opinion

Birmingham: Families@4

June 10, 2017 at CBSO Centre in Birmingham.

For ages 7+

Get close to our musicians and listen to beautiful music performed by BCMG.

BCMG presents a relaxed, hour-long, late-afternoon concert for the whole family exploring Secret Theatre by composer Harrison Birtwistle.

In Secret Theatre, the composer imagines the ensemble as a group of noisy voices on a stage, each instrument with its own voice and character trying to be heard above the general hubbub. What do you imagine the instruments are saying and what mood do you think they are in? Come and join us as we playfully take apart this classic of contemporary music.

BCMG’s hour-long Families@4 concerts for ages 7+ are a wonderful informal opportunity for all the family to experience the best classical music of our time.

Come and take part in linked pre-concert activities in the foyer of CBSO Centre, starting at 3pm.

Birmingham: Celebrating Three Masters

June 10, 2017 at CBSO Centre in Birmingham.

Conductor: Ryan Wigglesworth
Soprano: Claire Booth *

Oliver Knussen: Songs Without Voices
Colin Matthews: new work (World premiere / BCMG Sound Investment commission) *
Oliver Knussen: Four Late Poems and an Epigram of Rainer Maria Rilke *
Harrison Birtwistle: Secret Theatre

BCMG closes its 16/17 season with a concert celebrating three established masters of the British contemporary scene.

Dazzling soprano Claire Booth joins BCMG to premiere Colin Matthews’ Sound Investment vocal work and perform Oliver Knussen’s Four Late Poems for solo soprano.

In 2016, Knussen was awarded both the 2016 Ivor Novello Award for Classical Music and the Queen’s Medal for Music 2015, such is the regard in which he is held. Here his music features twice – Songs Without Voices, being, literally, songs without voice.

Harrison Birtwistle is without question a leading European figure in contemporary music. Everything in his music, whether staged or not, is conceived as at least latent theatre. In Secret Theatre, one of his most performed ensemble works, instruments jostle to be heard, moving across the concert platform to emphasise their interactions without words.

Birmingham: First USK – UK Get Together

June 09, 2017 at Birmingham, United Kingdom in Birmingham.

2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the Urban Sketchers movement. Today, there are approximately 90,000 sketchers globally, drawing “the cities where they live and visit, from the window of their homes, from a cafe, at a park, standing by a street corner … always on location, not from photos or memory.”

We in the UK are going to mark this important milestone with the very first UK Urban Sketchers Get Together – a celebratory 2 day‘meet up’ in Birmingham : evening of 9th June through to the afternoon of 11th, June. The ‘Get Together’ is absolutely FREE and sketchers of all levels, experience and background can join in. There will be no formal tuition or workshops, and you will need to arrange your own travel and accommodation. Despite being totally informal, we’ll grow and learn from seeing one another’s work, getting new ideas, and having fun!

During the day, we’ll be free to move around and sketch or paint whatever takes our fancy. Birmingham has so many iconic buildings including St Phillips Cathedral, the old Birmingham Eye Hospital, the Birmingham School of Art, the Council House, the Law Courts and the Cube. And if you tire of sketching buildings, you can always sketch people in Centenary Square, the Bullring Markets (sketchers not welcome in the Bullring Shopping Centre) or in the beautiful Edwardian Tea Rooms, housed in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. And for those who hanker to sketch canals and boats, there is the Gas Street Canal Basin. In the evenings we’ll get together and over a pint or two (or whatever is your favoured drink), share our sketches, share ideas, eat and chat. We will meet outside the Council House by the statue locally named ‘The Floozie” at Victoria Square first thing in the morning and at the end of the day for a ‘throw down’ of our sketch books.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be announcing more details here, so keep checking. It will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with friends, old and new, socialize and sketch to your heart’s content. So go on, mark the dates in your diary and let us know if you will be at UK’s very first Urban Sketchers Get Together.

Birmingham: Elton John

June 07, 2017 at Genting Arena in Birmingham.

2016 has been a vintage year for Elton John; he released his 33rd studio album Wonderful Crazy Night to rapturous applause, and wowed audiences across the UK with his epic live show which culminated in a headline performance last weekend at Hyde Park in London for BBC Radio 2. Next week (18th September) he will also perform at the annual Apple Music Festival.

From Longleat to Leicester, Edinburgh to Exeter, Elton John brought his unmistakable showmanship to the stage. The Guardian exclaimed how the Meadowbank Stadium show was “a hit parade of peerless pomp”, with the Herald observing “the maestro’s unbridled raison d’etre of showbiz classicist…sits somewhere between Liberace and Mozart”.

It was no different at the Lincolnshire Showground, where The Lincolnshire Echo simply declared, “when Sir Elton John came to Lincoln, Lincoln had one wonderful, crazy night”. In Liverpool, the Echo observed, “every song was note perfect, packed with the kind of energy that belies his years”

Now fans in Derby, Birmingham, Leeds and Airdrie can look forward to what will be one of the music events of 2017, as Elton John announces shows at Derby’s The 3aaa County Ground (4 June), Birmingham Genting Arena (7 June), Leeds First Direct Arena (8 June) and Airdrie Excelsior Stadium (24 June), performing songs from his latest studio album, ‘Wonderful Crazy Night’, as well as his most-loved hits.

“2017 will be my 50th year writing songs with Bernie Taupin. Our friendship remains one of the longest and most important relationships in my life. I have said many times that without meeting Bernie I would not have had the career, or fantastic life, I have had. Not by far. So my 2017 Tour, and especially the summer shows in the UK, will be dedicated to Bernie. He remains the most unique lyricist I could ever hope to work with, and a dear friend.”

An unmistakable name in the history of popular music, Elton John has done it all – and then some. From being awarded multiple Grammys and BRITs, and even an Oscar and a Tony Award, Elton has proven his universal acclaim. In addition to selling more than 250 million records worldwide, through his partnership with lyricist Tim Rice Elton wrote the music for the feature film and Broadway stage production of ‘The Lion King”.

Elton John has over 4,000 performances to his credit since launching his first tour in 1970. Having performed at several of the world’s most recognisable venues – including a pair of residencies at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Elton continues to be one of this country’s biggest pop-culture exports.

June 07, 2017 at AnchorCert Group in Birmingham.

This workshop is intended to educate and inspire NAJ Students as they develop a career in the Jewellery Industry. It offers relevant hands on experience which would not necessarily be available in the retail environment.

The workshop will offer a sound understanding of hallmarking and a glimpse into and overview of the jewellery industry through the eyes of the long established Assay Office Birmingham. It provides a unique opportunity to handle loose gemstones and standard gem equipment which delegates may have learned about but never had the opportunity to use in real life. Students also benefit from the chance to network with other NAJ students.

‘It Was Fifty Years Ago Today’
A Celebration of Sgt. Pepper and The Summer of Love
As Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band reaches its half century, the award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the nation’s premier Beatle group The Bootleg Beatles team up to perform this iconic album live in its entirety fifty years to the day of its original release.
With music arranged by Nigel Osborne and hosted by the legendary Liverpool poet Roger McGough, this special concert is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience what Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed ‘the number one greatest album of all time’ complete with full-blown symphonic backing.
Incorporating many other hits from the heady days of 1967 including ‘Strawberry Fields’, ‘Penny Lane’ and ‘All You Need Is Love’ don’t miss this highlight of our summer concert season.
