February 03, 2016 at Colston Hall in Bristol.

Bmin holds their monthly industry networking meeting on the first Wednesday of the month. This is an opportunity for anyone involved in the music industry to meet up, network, discuss issues and share news from the Bristol music scene.

This is an open meeting for anyone involved in the music industry – performers, songwriters, producers, promoters, venue owners, sound engineers, record company bosses, music publishers, music teachers, radio presenters, media journalists or anyone with any other involvement in music then come along – armed with your business cards, of course – and spend a few hours with like-minded people.

Guest speaker TBC

The venue is 3rd Floor Terrace Bar at Colston Hall, courtesy of our partners the Bristol Music Trust, who also provide the free coffee and sandwiches.

The meeting runs from noon to 2pm:

12:00 – 12:30 Networking
12:30 – 1:30 Bmin Meeting
1:30 – 2:00 Networking

At Bmin, we believe that the Bristol music scene can be the most exciting in the UK and respected throughout the world. We believe this because of the sheer quality, diversity and artistry of the many people that have chosen Bristol as the best place to realise their ambitions. In this culturally diverse and vibrant city they have the opportunity to meet like-minded people, get better and better at what they do and build successful careers.

Many of them are already Bmin members. Would you like to join and get to meet them? And find out that sometimes there CAN be such a thing as a free lunch!

Bristol: SOUL INGREDIENTS – Powerful Soul, Gospel & Blues. STAX Records Style

January 16, 2016 at The Golden Lion in Bristol.

Rising from the ashes of the legendary Bristol Soul Band’The Soul Searchers’, The Soul Ingredients carry on in the same tradition of authentic Stax style soul and R&B.

Defined by the thunderous roar of Pete Coggins’ vocal and tight horn parts over dirty, funky grooves and tough driving rhythms – this 6 piece is guaranteed to blow you away with its excellent musicianship and dynamic energy!

This is not another suit wearing show band tribute to’The Commitments’, this is earthy gritty soul in the vein of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Al Green etc.

This is music born out of the blues and bathed in gospel, this is music that is driving , honest and intense. This is Soul Music!

‘I’m a late arrival on Saturday and the party is in full swing for Pete Coggins’ old-school gravel vocals with the Soul Ingredients. Proving that the spirit of the 60s R&B boom has never dimmed the band wrestle every last drop of rocking energy out of their well-chosen repertoire of covers, with gleefully grandstanding solos aplenty. There’s more intoxicating fun in this music than any of the Coritap’s notorious barrels (though they might have fuelled some of it, of course) and the audience responds appropriately.’

The Danish Girl
————————

Eddie Redmayne gives a transformative performance, in a role that is sure to land him a second consecutive Oscar® nomination, in this true story of a Danish artist who was one of the first recipients of sexual reassignment surgery in this beautiful, moving biopic from The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper.

In 1920s Copenhagen, Einar Wegener (Redmayne) is an in demand landscape painter who is happily married to Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander), a less successful portrait artist. While working on her latest painting, Gerda asks her husband to stand in for a female model, wearing feminine clothes – and the experience doesn’t awaken new feelings in Einar, exactly, so much as stir some that were already there.

At first the sexually adventurous Gerda finds it a bit of a turn on, and is amused at her husband’s rediscovery, but when Einar attends an upcoming party as Lili (where an admirer, played by Ben Whishaw, notes “You’re different from most girls”) it becomes unclear which identity is the performance and which is the reality. The couple’s situation entered into completely unchartered territory as Einar finds it impossible to put the genie back in the bottle: she will become Lili, one of the first known recipients of gender reassignment surgery.

It’s a sensitive and remarkable story – of a personal struggle and of a marriage – that isn’t painted by numbers. The Danish Girl will be in the frame long after Oscar® season rolls by – mark our words.
