Cambridge: Allographic: Spoken Open Mic

February 28, 2016 at CB2 in Cambridge.

So, what’s Allographic Open Mic then? It’s a simple concept really – a nice function room at the top of a pleasant bistro; a stage, a microphone, a bunch of lovely people, and some words. And free snacks! Entry is free, but we take a donation (i.e. pay as you like). Doors are at 6:30pm and the gig kicks off at 7pm.

So – come and show us what you’ve got: step up to the open mic or enjoy the talent on display (ideally both, of course!). Pretty much anything goes, as long as you respect the audience and the ethos of the afternoon!

Bring your poems, stories, dramatic monologues (or duologues!), improv, hip hop, and anything else that fits the bill of spoken word. At 2pm there’ll be a workshop – details to follow.

We’ll be showing off our latest pamphlets and other poetry collections, along with the latest issue of Small Word, a poetry-short-story-photography-artwork magazine of petite loveliness that we launched in Cambridge in 2011.

Cambridge: January 2016 Commoners’ Comedy Club

January 14, 2016 at The Corner House in Cambridge.

If your new year’s resolution is to spend less time staring at a screen (like me) then come and join us for live entertainment on January 14th! It’s like getting your 5 a day, but for your soul.

Athena Kugblenu will be our opening act: Athena is a comic, event host and writer with intelligent, thought-provoking jokes that still have an edgy sting. She has been entertaining audiences all over the UK since April 2012.
You may remember her from the 2015 Finals of the BBC new comedy award, take a butchers at her website: http://www.athenakugblenu.co.uk/

“An intelligent set that managed to be both easily accessible and playful and still say something serious” –Bruce Dessau
“..socially astute…savvy observations…”–Steve Bennett
“A politically-aware standup and writer…conscious, confident and cool” –The Stand Up Picture Show, Bristol

Steve Mclean returns to our club because so many of you loved him last time. He is a stand-up based in East London. Merging sharp word play with inane chat and the occasional visual gag, his set is filled with variety and colour. He pronounces his name to rhyme with Shirley or John and not the toothpaste.

He’s got his own facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/SteveMclean/

The brilliant Jake Lambert will also be treating us to his presence/performance. He recently supported Matt Richardson on his UK tour and was nominated for the Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year so we’re lucky to get him.

“Brilliant one-liners” – Chortle.

“An abundance of one-liners, clever wordplay, short stories and strange thoughts which deliver a constant stream of laughter.” – Comedy Cow.

“Destined for big things” – Laughing Badger Comedy.

http://www.jakelambertcomedy.com/

Closing the show will be the gorgeous Gwilum Argos.

Gwilum is a musical comedian/MC and started doing stand up comedy in August 2007. Gwilum has a warm and confident on-stage persona, which lends itself naturally to audience interaction – his act consists of guitar based songs, observations, strange
impressions, quirky theories, improvised songs and one liners.

” Very funny material, beautifully delivered.” – Keyna Doran (Chipping Camden promoter)

“Very very funny” – Iain Lee

“A brilliant set” – Tom Stade

Don’t forget the Corner House does food now so you don’t need to rush your dinner down! Advance tickets via the link at the top of the page or from Jo Shippey/Ali Warwood if you catch us in real life.

Cambridge: Measure for Measure

February 10, 2016 at Cambridge Arts Theatre in Cambridge.

Measure for Measure
Cambridge Arts Theatre
Wednesday February 10 – Saturday February 13, 7,45pm
and Thursday and Saturday, 2.30pm

“The tempter or the tempted, who sins most?”

Vienna at the dawn of the 20th century. By day, a city of coffee shops and smart society. By night, a hotbed of sex and fevered dreams. The wealthy and the powerful climb the stairs to Doctor Freud’s consulting room.

The government decides it is time to wage war on vice. But nobody – not even the puritanical new ruler, Angelo – is immune to temptation. The Marlowe Society, Cambridge University’s leading drama society, celebrates the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a vivid production of his gripping drama of lust and repression.

Director Tom Littler is Artistic Director of the award-winning Primavera, and was Associate Director of the Peter Hall Company. His critically acclaimed work includes the world premiere of Howard Brenton’s Dances of Death.

The Marlowe Society returns to the Cambridge Arts Theatre after their recent acclaimed productions of Henry V and Dr Faustus. The Society has been responsible for launching the careers of some of Britain’s greatest actors including Sir Ian McKellen, Tilda Swinton, Rachel Weisz and Stephen Fry.

The Marlowe Society was founded in 1907 by a group of students including Justin Brooke as a reaction against Victorian theatre and tradition. Its purpose was to revive the presentation of Shakespeare in Cambridge which had not been performed since 1886, and, in doing so, raise the standard of verse-speaking by actors. Since then, it has met with remarkable success, maintaining these traditions and acting as a nursery of talent and reform.

Cambridge: FREE ENTRY! Camblast Promotions Presents: DORRE/WHOREMOAN/BRACKEN @THE CORNERHOUSE

January 12, 2016 at The Corner House in Cambridge.

Camblast Promotions Presents:
Dorre/ Whoremoan/ Bracken
FREE ENTRY

Dorre

www.dorre.bandcamp.com
Born out of the yeast of the infamous Belgian beer, Dorre has been crushing stages ever since Adriaan De Raymaeker (guitar) en Wolf Overloop (drums) joined forces. Going for a heavy doom/stoner/noise influenced type of music from the start, they rarely played live shows, but when they did, instant stuff of legend was created. After a few years they added Erik Heyns (guitar) as a full-member and this spiced up their sound with some more psych & blues influenced licks.
These days Dorre is active more than ever, sometimes joined by guest musicians. Putting their speakers to the test and to manifest a thunderous whirlwind around stages in Belgium and aiming to bring their sludgy, blackened riffs to all nations across the globe.

Whoremoan

www.whoremoan.bandcamp.com/
Whoremoan want to hurt you, in the ear. With huge riffs influenced by the likes of Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Monster Magnet, with a grounding in punk, metal and alternative rock the non-stop guitar/bass fuzz onslaught creates a sound loud and dirty enough to shake your teeth loose. Grinding dual guitars clamp you down whilst powerful bass & drums pound a groove in your face that instantly gets attention. Screaming lyrics barked at you like orders from a drill instructor complete the experience leaving you wondering whether you’ve been listening to a band or just received a good kicking. And you love it. With a live performance of high energy and mind-bending volume, Whoremoan are definitely a band to look out for.
