Liverpool: WAX LYRICAL – Bernie Connor

January 21, 2016 at Jacaranda Records Ltd in Liverpool.

Wax Lyrical is a series of talks with veteran collectors, musicians and DJs from the Liverpool scene, discussing the world of record collecting and beyond.

The knowledge imparted and stories shared provide an insight into the development of personal taste, inspirations in the creative process, and the trials and tribulations of a life devoted to music. Our inaugural guest last summer was psych-rock luminary EDGAR JONES.

Our guest this month is BERNIE CONNOR, lifelong DJ and encyclopaedia of Liverpool music happenings, from Eric’s to Cream and beyond into the 21st century.

Bernie will be presenting some of his favourite, most beloved music, and musing on a life spent in the company of sound. This is a unique opportunity to discover new music and absorb wisdom directly from a local legend.

A pretty neat way to spend an evening!

Liverpool: Liverpool Radical Film Festival presents BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION

January 17, 2016 at Liverpool Small Cinema in Liverpool.

THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph, and many others, THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America.

Preluded by the first ever short film made about the Black Panthers in 1968, and followed by a Q + A discussion with speakers (TBA). Join us for the first Liverpool Radical Film Festival event of 2016.

Liverpool: 80s Invasion Featuring Big Country, Midge Ure & Nick Heyward

March 06, 2016 at Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool.

Four of the decade’s most memorable artistes together for the first time, performing their biggest hits. With record sales of over 20 million, 200 gold, platinum and silver discs and numerous awards between them this is an 80s show unrivalled.

Big Country broke onto the scene with the release of the classic singles Fields Of Fire, Chance and their signature song In A Big Country, which went on to become massive worldwide hits.

Curiosity Killed The Cat were one of the hottest and most popular bands of the late eighties. Hit singles included Down to Earth, which peaked at number two in the charts and sold 1.5 million worldwide, Misfit, Ordinary Day, Hang On In There Baby and Name and Number (which later went on to be a hit single for De La Soul).

Midge Ure has received Ivor Novello, Grammy and BASCAP awards along with a flotilla of gold and platinum records. By the time his single If I Was went to number one in 1985 he had already crammed several musical lifetimes into a ten year career – Slik, The Rich Kids, Thin Lizzy, Visage, Ultravox and of course the most famous one off group in musical history Band Aid. Ultravox was a major influence on the new romantic and electro-pop movements of the early 80s.

Nick Heyward formed the band Haircut 100 in 1981 with Les Nemes and Graham Jones. They had four UK Top 10 singles and their debut album, Pelican West, reached number 1 in the UK charts. Nick’s solo career began in 1983 with his debut album North of a Miracle which reached number ten in the UK charts. He and Haircut 100 are responsible for hits including Whistle Down The Wind, Blue Hat For A Blue Day, Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl), Love Plus One, Fantastic Day and Nobody’s Fool.

Price: £29.50, £34.50
