Liverpool: Liverpool Provocations: Shrine by Forest Swords (performance 2)

January 23, 2016 at The Blackie in Liverpool.

As part of Liverpool Provocations, Metal presents SHRINE by FOREST SWORDS.

Forest Swords is an award-winning music producer and artist. Shrine will explore breathing as live musical and dance performance, offering respite from the physical indulgence of the festive period.

The piece, performed live at the atmospheric Black-E venue, aims for a re-alignment and focus on the self as a means of countering forces of consumer-focused excess and narcissism.

Swords’ previous commissions include Ground Rhythms, a reflection on locations that no longer physically exist, with the resulting music pressed onto delicate X-Ray film that instantly degrades in the act of being played.

Shrine will be performed twice on Saturday 23rd January, at 5pm and 8pm.

The performance is free but booking is essential. Tickets will be available on Friday 8th Jan.

Liverpool: Peter Andre – Come Swing With Me Tour

March 08, 2016 at Echo Arena Liverpool in Liverpool.

It’s been twenty years since Peter Andre was first catapulted into the public consciousness with his global hit ‘Mysterious Girl’. It’s been a remarkable journey: three chart-topping singles; a further seven Top 10 hits; and Platinum, Gold and Silver certifications for seven of his albums to date. And that’s before we even consider his ability to fill large scale venues such as The O2 Arena, Wembley Arena and the Royal Albert Hall.

Now Peter is set to embark upon a new stage in his recording career with the October 16th release of his new album ‘Come Fly With Me’. It’s his first release under a new deal with East West Records / Warner Music. The album coincides with Peter’s participation on the new celeb-packed series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Inspired in part by the 100th anniversary of Frank Sinatra’s birth, ‘Come Fly With Me’ is full of Peter’s takes on RatPack standards including the album title track ‘Come Fly With Me’, ‘Mac The Knife’ and ‘Ain’t That A Kick In The Head’. Peter has created a collection of songs which is rich in authentic swingin’ sounds, from the rhythmic diction of his vocals through to live percussion and a full brass section.

Liverpool: Madam Butterfly – Russian State Opera

February 25, 2016 at Floral Pavilion Theatre in Liverpool.

Russian State Opera enjoyed a well deserved standing ovation” 5Star Rating Daily Post

Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live Orchestra with over 30 musicians

This tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music.
Set in Japan at the turn of the century, Madam Butterfly is among the most colourful and exotic of all operas, and from its theme of noble self-sacrifice spring melodies that grips your heart.

The basis of the plot is actually a true story of a Japanese geisha girl who had a son by ‘marriage’ to an American naval officer who soon deserted her, leaving her heartbroken.

With all the cultural sensitivity of a day-tripper, Lt B.F. Pinkerton is making himself at home in Nagasaki. On the suggestion of his friend Sayre, he takes a Japanese wife and house for the duration of his stay there. Pinkerton set his sights on Cio Cio San, fragile and delicate as a butterfly.
In order to become his bride she must cross cultural boundaries and defy the will of her family.

Pinkerton’s ship eventually sets sail from Japan. In his absence and unbeknownst to him, she gives birth to their child, a son whom she names Trouble. As time goes by, Cio Cio San is still convinced that Pinkerton will return to her some day.
She argues furiously with Susuki, her faithful maid, who believes foreign husbands never return.
The most touching moments in the opera are when Butterfly, prepared for the worst, spies his ship sailing into harbour ‘just when you all tell me to weep and forgive him… he’s there! He loves me!

Pinkerton finally appears with his American wife. He has come to take away his son but leaves it to the American Consul to do the dirty job. Shaken to the core, Cio Cio San obeys her husband’s will and hands over her son.

The grief and dishonour is too much for her to bear and she kills herself. Pinkerton does return later only to find her cold body.

This touching story of innocent love crushed amidst two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.
