Liverpool: Skeptics in the Pub – Emma McClure: The Phantom of Heilbronn and other Forensic Faux Pas

January 21, 2016 at Vines in Liverpool.

We’ve all seen it: A renegade detective pores over the scene of a grizzly murder. They find an overlooked clue; a hair, a footprint, a shell casing. Detailed forensic analysis matches the clue to the bad guy, and the bad guy goes to jail. This is how modern day forensics are portrayed in shows such as ‘CSI’ and ‘Silent Witness’; forensic evidence is seen as conclusive when it comes to catching suspects and deciding if someone is guilty in a criminal trial. But could the traces left behind at a crime scene lie?

The science in areas such as DNA collection has progressed enormously in recent decades allowing for breakthroughs in many old and cold cases. However, we have also seen many high profile exonerations of those previously convicted of the most serious of crimes on seemingly ‘conclusive’ forensic evidence. This has lead to increasing scrutiny of the way it is analysed, interpreted and presented in the courtroom.

In this talk, prison lawyer Emma McClure examines the issues with forensic techniques, highlighting the amusing, confusing and sometimes tragic consequences of failing to take a skeptical approach to evidence in the field of forensic science.

Our speaker events have wheelchair access, via a portable ramp which can be installed on-demand. If possible, please let us know you’re coming through contact@merseysideskeptics.org.uk so we can make sure the ramp is ready.

Liverpool: Leasowe Lighthouse

March 04, 2016 at Fourth Element Paranormal Research Events in Liverpool.

Fourth Element Paranormal Research are proud to announce a Ghost Hunt at Leasowe Lighthouse Wallasey. Tickets £25pp which includes membership to The Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse.

Leasowe Lighthouse provided a line to navigators when viewed with Bidston Hill Lighthouse.

Leasowe Lighthouse was built in 1763 by Liverpool Corporation’s Docks Committee (the forerunner of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board) and is the oldest brick built lighthouse in Britain.
It was one of four lights on the North Wirral foreshore, the others being two at Hoylake and another, a lower light, at Leasowe. The latter was soon destroyed by the sea and was replaced by Bidston Hill Lighthouse in 1771.
The lighthouse was operational until 14 July 1908, with the only known female lighthouse keeper in those days, a Mrs Williams. It then became a tearoom for a period, but was unused until 1989, when it became base for the ranger service of the North Wirral Coastal Park.
It, like Bidston Hill Lighthouse, was not required after buoys had been laid to show the safe channel.
The lighthouse has 8 floors with one room per floor, starting from the bottom, store room, kitchen, living room, next 3 are bedrooms, store room and lamp room a spiral staircase goes right up to the lamp room.
Ownership was assumed by the Wirral Borough Council in 1988 after it had been left to become a wreck, and restoration has continued since by the Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse, with council funding and grant aid. The staircase is back in place and visitors can now go up. There is a visitor centre in the base of the tower, and funds are being raised to restore the upper rooms to their original appearance.

March 03, 2016 at Hot Water Comedy Club, 2nd Floor, Holiday Inn in Liverpool.

Hot Water Comedy Club are bringing Paul Daniels & Debbie McGee’s ‘Intimate’ Magic Tour to Liverpool.

Several years ago the most entertaining magic guy in the world, Paul Daniels, together with his wife, Debbie McGee, toured with a small, intimate, magic show and had so much fun they have decided to do it again.

They will be bringing their night of bafflement and laughter up and down the country with a unique show that is definitely not to be missed.

For many years the Paul Daniels Magic Show ruled the airwaves and since then his live shows have been winning awards worldwide.

In fact this tour will be their first public appearances in the UK since their successful USA shows.

If you care to visit www.pauldaniels.co.uk you will find a page listing all the awards and honours that Paul has received from magical organisations worldwide.

They call him ‘The Legend’ and Dynamo has called him ‘The Godfather of Magic’. From her time as a ballet dancer in Iran, and becoming a lot more than Paul’s assistant, Debbie now appears in her own right, both on stage and on her Radio Berkshire show.

In this show, as you will see, she joins in the fun that is ‘The Intimate Show’. Follow the adventures of Paul and Debbie on Twitter @thepauldaniels & @thedebbiemcgee and on Facebook.com/thepauldaniels.
