Birmingham’s world-famous reggae stars UB40 have announced a major eight-date UK tour for December 2017.

Featuring UB40’s five founding members Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer and Norman Hassan, and long-time members Duncan Campbell, Martin Meredith, Lawrence Parry and Tony Mullings, the first of the ‘Cities and Towns Tour’ dates will be at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on Tuesday, 5th December 2017, with the tour ending at Manchester’s O2 Apollo on Sunday, 17th December.

Robin Campbell said, “UB40 are very excited to be returning to some of the biggest venues in the UK during our ‘Cites and Towns’ tour in December 2017. We are also particularly pleased to be playing such a fantastic venue for our hometown gig in Birmingham.”

Fans can expect to hear UB40’s greatest hits, including ‘Food For Thought’, ‘One In Ten’, ‘Kingston Town’, ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You’ and ‘Red, Red Wine’, amongst many, many others.

Tickets go on sale at 10.00am on Friday, 16th December 2016, available from http://www.seetickets.com/tour/ub40?pre=ub2017

Naming themselves after the unemployment benefit form, UB40 formed in 1978, before releasing their debut album ‘Signing Off’ in August 1980 – considered by many to be one of the greatest reggae albums ever released by a British band. It was the start of a career that has since seen the band have over forty UK Top 40 hit singles and achieve sales of over 100 million records, making UB40 one of the most successful British groups of all-time.

London: Anna Ashby: the one in the many

December 03, 2017 at triyoga in London.

Anna will be offering a unique series of workshops called ‘precision + subtlety’ – with each session limited to 18 students.

In this smaller group format, a learning environment with detailed instruction will refine and hone the practice allowing for precision and subtlety of experience. Attention to alignment and details will encourage a more conscious and considered approach that lends itself to going deeper into the experience of yoga.

Each workshop offers a different sequence that embodies a particular theme and teaching focus, as well as a different category of poses. Workshops can be taken individually or as a series. The workshop is ideal for teachers, teachers in training and experienced students who wish to further their understanding of modern postural yoga. The intimate format and longer time frame allows for exploration, dialogue and questions.

‘the one in the many’ – This is the last workshop in the ‘precision + subtlety’ series for 2017. Within the all categories of poses there is one pose, Tāḍāsana – the Mountain Pose, that presents the blueprint for all poses. This workshop reveals its simplicity, subtlety, stability and presence, and explores how Tāḍāsana provides a framework for learning how to approach and master the diversity of poses presented within the different hatha yoga schools. While the main teaching of Tantra, the philosophical body that hatha yoga springs from, explains that there is one vital energy that flows through the many and diverse forms of this reality, it is no surprise that this same principle exists within the varied asana of the hatha yoga tradition. Come and discover ‘the one in the many’ both in form and beyond form.

Category of poses: some standings and inversions with some restorative + meditation

Students are expected to have a mature practice of 3+ years. If you have questions about suitability of level, please contact anna@annaashby.com

Anna Ashby has been studying and practising yoga for 20 years and has been teaching since 1999. She holds the highest level of certification by the Yoga Alliance – the Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500 – and she also holds a B.A. in Modern Dance. The core of Anna’s yoga training and inspiration comes from many years of dedicated study and practice of Siddha Yoga Meditation.™ Anna’s teaching style blends an appreciation for alignment with a real love of movement. She teaches with a steady, upbeat and methodical approach to asana practice that encourages introspection, contemplation as well as fun. Anna regularly leads retreats + trainings in the UK and is on the faculty of the triyoga teacher training programme.

London: Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantatas

December 03, 2017 at Royal Academy of Music in London.

Duke’s Hall
Iain Ledingham director
Margaret Faultless leader

JS Bach Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir, BWV 130
JS Bach Bereitet die Wege, bereitet die Bahn!, BWV 132
JS Bach Christen ätzet diesen Tag, BWV 63

Performed on modern instruments.

Tickets £15 (concessions £12), season discounts available. Book from Tuesday 4th October 2016: By telephone 020 7873 7300, in person (Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm) and online

The final concert of the season focuses on celebratory works for Christmas and Michaelmas. Christen ätzet diesen Tag (‘Christians, engrave this day’), probably written for Weimar in 1715, has all the accoutrements of festive music but without any of the more picturesque elements associated with the Christmas story. Its opening chorus speaks of carving the date in marble, and indeed there is a certain monumentality about the score, with no fewer than four trumpet parts and a very rich contrapuntal fabric throughout.

Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir (‘Lord God, we all praise Thee’) commemorates the apocalyptic battle between the heavenly host and Satan’s rebels, and celebrates the angels’ guardianship of Christian souls. Its most striking movements are the battle-style opening chorus, setting a well-known hymn, and a remarkable bass aria about the devil, accompanied by three trumpets and kettle drums. Between these two cantatas comes a gentler Weimar work for the Fourth Sunday in Advent, Bereitet die Wege, bereitet die Bahn! (‘Prepare the ways, prepare the path!’), which looks forward to the birth of Christ with dancing expectation and — in an unforgettable soprano aria — prayerful contemplation.

London: Royal Arsenal – Origins Tours

December 03, 2017 at Royal Arsenal Tours in London.

Three hundred years ago an accident occurred that would change the history of Woolwich forever and set it on the path of being the biggest munitions manufacturer in the world.

This tour takes you through the reasons why the arsenal was built and the history of some of the original buildings. The tour will also touch on the two other organisations founded at the site, The Royal Regiment of Artillery and Dial Square F.C.

The tour will also highlight a few of the many notable buildings of the site from it’s 300 years, but it will in no way be comprehensive as for that a tour would take several days. If you are a resident or have a particular building you are interested in please mention this in the comments section of the booking or email richard@royalarsenaltours.co.uk so your guide can do some extra swatting up.

We will then jump forward in time to the death of the Royal Arsenal as a factory site and its re-birth as a new and vibrant community.

This tour is on the eve of St Barbara’s day, the patron saint of the Royal Artillery and anyone who works with explosives. This would include the Arsenal. We will be adding her story to this tour.

The tour will start and end at the sites newest bar, The Taproom. Included in the £12 ticket price is a free pint of Hop Stuff beer. The tour will take approximately an hour and a half. Please note this is an on street tour. Most of the buildings on the tour have already been converted and occupied by businesses or as residential so access inside is not possible. Wear clothing appropriate to the forecast weather conditions.

London: Mitsuko Uchida at Southbank Centre December 1, 2017

December 01, 2017 at Royal Festival Hall in London.

One of the composer’s less well-known sonatas, it is nevertheless exquisitely beautiful, full of his trademark melodiousness.

The A minor Sonata D.845 is a substantial, uncompromising work, its driving energy and bleak textures contrasting with an irresistible tenderness. Its central set of variations finishes as if in an other-worldly dream.

To conclude, the D major Sonata D.850 is a high-octane piece, an exceptionally extrovert sonata for Schubert. Wit, humour and good-natured passion dance through its four movements.

“The great Schubert interpreter of this generation, perhaps the greatest in the era of recorded music” (New York Classical Review).

This concert takes place as part of Mitsuko Uchida’s three-year project in collaboration with Southbank Centre.
