Salford: Elf The Musical theatre trip

December 27, 2017 at The Lowry in Salford.

tracking.php?code=AHkyBb0sVuXRyMMOwDaqcn

I’ve got x40 top price tickets (front centre circle, rows C,D,E,F) for Elf at the Lowry at 2.30pm on Wednesday 27 December 2017. They are £58 each, including ice cream (but not transport) – I have decided against booking transport for this show as most people have requested to make their own way their and back to the Lowry as it’s the Christmas holidays.

Tickets are on reserve until 31 January, when they need to be paid for in full or returned.

If there are enough people wanting transport then we can sort this at a later date.

Thanks,

Lou x

Salford: Stephen Mustchin talk – Strikes, workplace occupations and ‘the

June 07, 2017 at Working Class Movement Library in Salford.

Stephen Mustchin talk Strikes, workplace occupations and ‘the right to share hardship’; engineering trade unionism and the 1980 occupation at Gardner.

This talk, by Stephen Mustchin, Lecturer in Employment Studies, University of Manchester, focuses on engineering trade unionism, workplace conflict and strikes at the famous Eccles-based engine manufacturer L. Gardner and Sons.

Strong workplace union organisation emerged following two long strikes in 1968 and late 1972, and in 1980 a high-profile strike and occupation against mass redundancies won significant concessions. The organisation exhibited by the Gardner workforce was remarkable and represented a partial victory in a period when strikes were increasingly difficult to organise. However, retribution by the company led to the erosion of these gains demonstrating their fragility in the wider context of recession, deindustrialization and increasingly anti-union management in the 1980s.

Based on a recently-published article in the academic journal Historical Studies in Industrial Relations, and drawing on wider historical research on strikes in the 1980s, the talk draws on research based on materials held at WCML and interviews with former employees and participants.

This talk is part of the Invisible Histories series – all welcome, admission free, light refreshments afterwards.

Salford: Into The Water: Paula Hawkins in Conversation

May 06, 2017 at The Lowry in Salford.

tracking.php?code=asYAxOR6HEEM7R8rY0OmUK

In 2015, Paula Hawkins’ debut novel The Girl on The Train received worldwide critical acclaim, catapulting the South London journalist from struggling writer to literary celebrity. Within two years Hawkins went from writing on the verge of panic, close to throwing it all in, to successful author of a multi-million dollar Hollywood adaptation.

Join Hawkins for an exclusive afternoon at The Lowry for her only UK theatre appearance as she discusses her incredible journey so far and introduces her follow-up psychological thriller, Into The Water, a gripping, twisting, layered story set in a small riverside town. Sharing the suspense that pervades both her life and her writing, from the days spent penning the make-or-break novel to the inexorable and unyielding success that followed, to her latest work as she once again demonstrates her powerful understanding of human instincts and the damage they can inflict.

Paula Hawkins says: “This story has been brewing for a good while. For me there is something irresistible about the stories we tell ourselves, the way voices and truths can be hidden consciously or unconsciously, memories can be washed away and whole histories submerged. Then two sisters appeared, and the novel began to form.”

Don’t miss the chance to hear from the author herself and be one of the first to get your hands on Hawkins’ riveting new publication, set to captivate another wave of fervent readers worldwide.

A Penguin Live event

Please note: to purchase a signed copy of Paula’s new novel Into The Water at a discounted price of £15 (RRP £20), select the ‘Ticket and Book’ offer when booking your ticket. Pre-purchased books will be available to collect from the on-site Waterstones on the night of the event.
