Southsea: World Wide Knit in Public Day

June 10, 2017 at Seeded in Southsea.

tracking.php?code=RzmhrJqQPCy4KOtUBgHgPJ

http://www.wwkipday.com

World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes.

It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits.

This a specific day to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in tow) just for you and people like you. Who knows you might even bump into your neighbor!

Consider this a spark, to ignite a fire; getting all of the closeted knitters out into fresh air.

More details will come out about what we have planned <3

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult

All you need to know: One of the best live bands on the planet. That’s it.

“Once they started back in 1993, Melt-Banana have remained like an eye of a hurricane that’s 10 times crazier than the hurricane itself. One of the core bands to emerge from the same roiling soup that birthed art-damaged titans such as the Flying Luttenbachers and the Locust, the female-fronted Japanese group added a few twists to the genetic makeup of 90s noise rock. Japan’s own rich noise tradition was little more than a touchstone for Melt-Banana, and the group’s cryptic otherness elevated it above its peers.” Pitchfork

Salford: Stephen Mustchin talk – Strikes, workplace occupations and ‘the

June 07, 2017 at Working Class Movement Library in Salford.

Stephen Mustchin talk Strikes, workplace occupations and ‘the right to share hardship’; engineering trade unionism and the 1980 occupation at Gardner.

This talk, by Stephen Mustchin, Lecturer in Employment Studies, University of Manchester, focuses on engineering trade unionism, workplace conflict and strikes at the famous Eccles-based engine manufacturer L. Gardner and Sons.

Strong workplace union organisation emerged following two long strikes in 1968 and late 1972, and in 1980 a high-profile strike and occupation against mass redundancies won significant concessions. The organisation exhibited by the Gardner workforce was remarkable and represented a partial victory in a period when strikes were increasingly difficult to organise. However, retribution by the company led to the erosion of these gains demonstrating their fragility in the wider context of recession, deindustrialization and increasingly anti-union management in the 1980s.

Based on a recently-published article in the academic journal Historical Studies in Industrial Relations, and drawing on wider historical research on strikes in the 1980s, the talk draws on research based on materials held at WCML and interviews with former employees and participants.

This talk is part of the Invisible Histories series – all welcome, admission free, light refreshments afterwards.

Welwyn Garden City: The Royal Ballet: The Dream / Symphonic Variations / Marguerite

June 07, 2017 at CWE WGC in Welwyn Garden City.

tracking.php?code=N8LDACa97cy2QSRw2gF4Jp

Live from The Royal Opera House, London.

This gorgeous mixed programme demonstrates the great creative vision of Frederick Ashton, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet.

The Dream is Ashton’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s riotous comedy in which a forest sprite plays havoc, armed with a love potion. Symphonic Variations was Ashton’s first work after World War II, and one of the Company’s first to be performed on the huge main stage of the Royal Opera House, in 1946. With six dancers performing a series of quartets, duets, sextets and solos to Franck’s brooding Variations symphoniques, this seminal masterpiece celebrates the
pure beauty of movement.

Marguerite and Armand is Ashton’s beautiful and emotional retelling of a well-known story, familiar to us through Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton famously created this poignant ballet on Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in 1963.
